The Emerging New Society

In cities throughout America, citizens are creating new kinds of institutions to meet the needs of families, neighborhoods and communities. These on-the-ground models and innovations—ranging from education to health care, transportation to environmental protection, housing to policing—are beginning to build a new American society just beneath the surface of public and media attention.

The very best of these "gems" now actually operating in communities and regions around the United States are elements of a mosaic of institutions which taken together begin to suggest the outlines of a vision of a better, more democratic and pluralistic—and achievable—society.

What could life be like in any community—in our community—if we were able to bring together the best innovations to address our local challenges and problems?

Shortly, the National Center will publish a survey of dozens of institutions that have been renewed all over the United States: in Louisville, Kentucky; Seattle, Washington; Alexandria, Louisiana; the Bronx, New York; Baltimore, Maryland; Oakland County, Michgan; and in many other communities. This report will focus on innovations in 11 areas of a community's life:

  • City governance
  • Education
  • Workplace
  • Housing
  • Health care
  • Policing and justice
  • Food
  • Recycling and reuse
  • Senior citizens
  • Transportation
  • Arts and culture
